We can therefore find variations from both subsystems in Canadian English, to the extent that there is no defined Canadian standard. However, Canada is equally under the influence of the United States, not least because of the proximity between the two nations. In the historical context of the British colonization of Canada, this becomes easier to understand. In Canada, the British subsystem prevails for the most part. A toonie, the name for the two-dollar coin, combined the number two and the word loonie. It gets its name from the image of a Canadian loon bird on it. It’s often used to ask someone to confirm or repeat what they are saying, to ask a question or to show surprise.Ī loonie is slang for the one-dollar coin. Like ‘sorry’, Eh? is used in everyday Canadian lingo.
